Samsung Digimax Pro 815

Spotted by forums member William Chang it appears that Samsung has today revealed an SLR-like digital camera at a Photo Fair in Beijing. The Digimax Pro 815 has a 28-420 mm zoom lens (mechanical zoom, focus ring, exposure compensation ring) mated to a 2/3" CCD sensor of unknown resolution (although the '8' in the model name may hint eight megapixels). Other key specifications include a 3.5" TFT LCD monitor, a flash hot shoe, 2.5 frames per second shooting, fast startup and operation and a Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. The camera also appears to have an EVF viewfinder. We will report more specifications / details as we receive them. (20:25 GMT)

Nikon respond to RAW WB concerns

Nikon has today issued an advisory addressing the current concerns around the 'encryption' of white balance data in its NEF (RAW) files from the D2X and D2Hs digital SLR's. This story started three days ago when Photoshopnews.com published an interview with chief engineer and original author of Photoshop Thomas Knoll which complained that Nikon were now encrypting white balance data in their NEF files and that future versions of Adobe Camera RAW would not be able to read WB data.

Is the Nikon D50 better than the D70?

Based on specifications there are couple of major points:
1) 3D Color Matrix II (D70/D70s 3D Color Matrix I, D100 3D Matrix), similar to the one used in D2H/D2Hs/D2X. Exactly what is the difference between I and II is unknown, Nikon only says it's better.2) USB 2.0 High Speed vs. Full Speed (1.1 compatible) in D70/D70s.
3) A new AF focus mode: AF-A, i.e. camera automatically selects AF-S or AF-C mode for user, probably based on subject movement. Canon has this option before but in Digital Rebel it's not user selectable between single focus or continuous focus. Probably a good feature for beginner users.
4) A new Digital Vari-Program: Child. Documentation is not clear about the difference of this mode vs. the Portrait mode. Again something for the beginners.
And one aspect that D50 is better than D70/D70s not clearly shown in specification:5) Faster continuous shoot mode.
By specifications D50 is not as good as D70: 2.5 fps vs. 2.8 fps in D70s. However, in Phil Askey's D50 preliminary report D50 is actually better than D70s in terms of total number of shots at the full speed and fps after internal buffer is full. For example, D50 can shoot at 2.5 fps for 45 shots whereas D70 is only 15 shots (350D is 21 shots @ 2.8 fps). And after buffer is filled D50 can keep going at 2.2 fps until the SD card is full, whereas D70 is at 2 fps and 350D 1.6 fps.
In Phil's test, pressing shutter for 30 seconds would produce total of 73 shots for D50, 65 shots for D70, and 58 shots for 350D.
It's interesting to see Nikon (and Pentax/Olympus) would bring out new DSLR for lower end customers with better performance/specification in some area than the older and higher end models.

ISO on Digital SLR Camera

The ISO reading on a digital camera is the indicates how light sensitive the camera is. A higher ISO rating is more sensitive whilst a lower ISO rating is less sensitive. Most compact digital camera has an ISO of between 100 - 400, however when you ove up to the digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, they range from 100 - 1600 or more. Therefore, with very low light, digital SLR cameras can take great pictures.

www.infodigitalcamera.com feedback

Feedback from www.infodigitalcamera.com on one of our readers

Great website! You've just provided me with the best information possible in making a DSLR buying decision. Giving excellent information, as your website demonstrates, is the best knowledge in obtaining a good working DSLR purchase. I have been tossing the idea of going Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sigma, Fuji or none of them. My favorites with my budget would have been Nikon D70 or Canon 10D. I didn't want to buy the D70 cause it lacks an extra battery grip, but I like Nikon's. I didn't want to go Canon 10D cause it's being discontinued and it's a tad overpriced. Olympus has a great product but I thought about the E-300 and found it's Made in China and it appears too plastic. Pentax has always produced great cameras but their istDs is too small and is too light. I don't know anything about the foveon Sigma cameras, but will study some more. And of course there is Fuji with their $2500 S3 Pro and thats too far above my budget. And having to use two batteries for metering and camera functions is beyond me. Personally, that's some poor engineering in my estimation. So. thanks for your website and I'm drooling over the new Nikon line and can't wait to see what the new D70s will cost.

Olympus E-300 Digital SLR camera

The E-300 ('EVOLT' in North America) became the second ever Four Thirds System digital SLR when it was announced by Olympus at Photokina 2004. The camera features an eight megapixel Kodak 4/3 Type CCD sensor, a Four Thirds lens mount and an unusual Optical Porro Finder. The viewfinder uses four mirrors instead of a prism, its sideways swinging mirror lends to the camera's flat-top profile. Instead of the image from the lens being directed upwards to the viewfinder prism it is directed rightwards and then up to the viewfinder which is offset from the lens axis.

Kodak DCS Pro Digital SLR camera

On February 12th 2004 Kodak announced the new DCS Pro SLR/n, an improved version of the 14n. Improvements included a redesigned sensor, a new type of filter over the sensor surface, new analog and digital boards and new software features. Just over one month later at CeBIT Kodak announced the SLR/c a new digital SLR with the heart of the SLR/n but in a new body and with a Canon lens mount. This is Kodak's first Canon mount digital SLR since 1998's DCS 560.
Anyone who has seen the Sigma SA9 / SD9 / SD10 should instantly recognize the shape of the top of the camera and the controls, the rest of the body is obviously custom made for Kodak and to be honest this isn't the prettiest or most ergonomically friendly camera, but then neither is the SLR/n (or was the 14n).
The SLR/c becomes the highest pixel count Canon mount digital SLR, it has a full 35mm frame (no crop factor) CMOS sensor which has 14 million photosites (compared to the next highest, Canon's EOS-1Ds with 11 million photosites).

Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D

The Maxxum 7D is Konica Minolta's first digital SLR for five years (since the RD-3000), it is based on the Maxxum 7 (Dynax 7) film SLR with a very similar body design and control layout. The main differences are obviously that the 7D has a digital 'heart', a large LCD monitor and control system and loses the 7's grip sensor. The 7D is clearly targeted at the higher end of the digital SLR market, at keen prosumer's and professionals, and that's reflected in its price at $1,599 (body only) it's up against cameras such as the Canon EOS 20D, Fujifilm S3 Pro, Olympus E-1 and Nikon D70 (which while cheaper is probably equally as capable).

Kyocera has today announced that it has decided to terminate the Contax branded camera business. Contax joined forces with Yashica in the 1960s, which became part of the electronics giant Kyocera in the mid-1990s. The history of the name goes back to the original Contax camera produced by Zeiss Ikon AG in 1932. The company announced its first 35mm SLR film camera, the Contax S, in 1949. A dark cloud has been hanging over the Contax brand since Kyocera announced it was to end of camera production last month.

Extra Megapixels - do you need it

The current trend with digital cameras is increasing the megapixels. This was fine a few years ago when the resolution was poor. Now, digital cameras are starting from 5 megapixel plus and I believe this is more than enough for the average user. If you are deciding to purchase a camera for the extra resolution think twice before you hand over your money. Remember the marketing guys are out there to make you spend big!!
